Join us May 29th at 5 PM for a musical jazz performance inspired by the exhibition Hair & Newton: The Rise of the Highwaymen featuring Tampa based pianist and improviser Julián Pernett Castilla, percussionist Matthew Korloch, and mandolinist Fil Pate.
Julián Pernett Castilla’s music reflects his Colombian Caribbean heritage and his passion for improvisation that is rooted in classical and Afro-Latin jazz fusion traditions. A professor of music at St. Leo University, Julián received his Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the Universidad Juan N. Corpas (Bogota, Columbia), a Master’s of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master’s of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of South Florida.
Matthew Korloch is a percussionist, educator, and performer in the Tampa Bay area. A recent graduate of the University of South Florida (USF) School of Music, Korloch received dual Bachelors’ degrees in Percussion Performance and Jazz Drum Set Studies. A former percussionist in the Gulf Coast Symphony, Mr. Korloch has performed in numerous festivals across the region and beyond including the National Music Festival, Miami Music Festival, and the CAMPground Festival in Tampa Bay and has performed alongside esteemed jazz and classical artists including Ross Strauser, Alexis Cole, Jack Wilkins, and Grammy-nominated composer Chuck Owens.
Fil Pate is a mandolinist, guitarist, and music theory enthusiast. With musical influences from many genres and styles including the likes of Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, and Widespread Panic, Pate focuses on preserving the traditional Americana art forms of Jazz and Bluegrass as well as several world music genres to create unique soundscapes that are inherently his own. Growing up in the mountains of North Georgia, Fil currently resides in the Tampa Bay area where he maintains an active presence in the Tampa music scene.
