According to current statistics, females currently make up about 49.7% of the world’s population (data.worldbank.org). And although females earn nearly three-fourths of all academic arts degrees (artsy.com), they represent just 2 percent of the market (artnet.com). Despite the notable gains made by women in many areas in recent decades, females in the art world continue to lag behind in virtually every category from gallery sales to museum leadership positions. What are the special struggles that women artists have faced through the centuries and continue to face today? Join us as we celebrate some fearless and famous females in art history – artists like Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Cassatt, Frida Kahlo, and Georgia O’Keeffe who rebelled against convention and challenged the status quo of their day. We’ll also trace the paths of some lesser-known ladies whose names have been shrouded in history but deserve our respect and admiration.

Jan Hurndon has served as a docent at the AGB for 11 years, and has taught an art appreciation class at the museum for the last 10 years. An incurable “culture geek”, she spent part of her college years in Ecuador and Paris, earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and French. Jan spent most of her working life in international marketing, a career that literally showed her the world. Her love of art and history always loomed in the background, so she returned to school (some 30 years later!) and earned a master’s degree in history and culture where she focused her research on French Gothic architecture. When she’s not making memories with her grandkids or busy planning her next travel adventure with her husband, she counts herself as extremely blessed to be able to share her passion for the visual arts with the local community through the AGB.
