Join new FSC Professor of Art History Dr. Andrew Crocker for an art history seminar at the AGB Museum of Art. During this three-week course, attendees will take a deep dive in examining the following question: How do we understand the ancient world and how did artists and viewers in antiquity understand their own past? In this series of lectures, Dr. Crocker will explore the ways in which ancient art told stories of the past, was destroyed or reshaped to erase the past, and how we re-interpret ancient art today.
The lectures cover a diverse range of materials, including Greek vase painting, Roman frescoes, Christian destruction of pagan statues, and more recent artistic movements that were shaped by ancient art and have shaped our understanding of ancient art in turn. No background in ancient art is required; each session offers stories and images for a closer look at how ancient and modern audiences have repeatedly reshaped the meaning of ancient art.

About the Speaker
Dr. Andrew Crocker is Assistant Professor of Art History in the Department of Art History and Museum Studies at Florida Southern College. His research focuses on the social and political significance of Roman art, with particular attention to the role of art in negotiating identity and status in the Roman provinces. His current research projects trace the impact of imperial expansion on Roman self-definition and the role of Roman portraiture in local politics in Greece and North Africa.
