Gallery Talk with Artist Stephen Althouse

  • AGB Museum of Art 800 E Palmetto St Lakeland, FL 33801 US (map)

On Friday, September 26th at 2 pm, artist Stephen Althouse will provide an in depth overview of his featured exhibition Shrouded in Mystery.

Stephen Althouse (b. 1948) is a contemporary sculptor-photographer raised in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Early experiences on farms in the U.S., Mexico, and Argentina, along with years of arduous labor jobs, shaped his lifelong focus on themes of toil, spirituality, and humanity’s struggles with war. Thinking as a sculptor, Althouse assembles tools and artifacts, then photographs them with large-format film to create monumental, minimalist images.

His innovations in large-scale black-and-white digital printing gained international attention during a Fulbright Creative Research Fellowship in Belgium (2003–2004), leading to major museum exhibitions and acquisitions across North America, Europe, and South America. He holds a BFA in sculpture from the University of Miami, an MFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Fine Art at Barry University.

Now based in the farmlands of central Pennsylvania, where he has resided for almost 20 years, Althouse develops ideas for his artwork stimulated by his close interaction with the local Amish community. Althouse continues to exhibit widely, with recent shows at the Phillips Museum of Art (Pennsylvania), Crocker Art Museum (California), Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Argentina), Mobile Museum of Art (Alabama), Attleboro Arts Museum (Massachusetts), Bellefonte Art Museum (Pennsylvania) among others.
